Dos and Don’ts of Eating While Having Clear Aligners

5 Dos and Don’ts of Eating While Having Clear Aligners

Don’t worry, you won’t need to rethink your whole diet while you’re undergoing treatment—isn’t it one of the main reasons you opted for clear aligners in the first place? Unlike braces firmly attached to your teeth, aligners are removable. They won’t be in the way when you eat, stashing food leftovers and tripling your teeth brushing time. While convenient and easy to wear, clear aligners do require special care and a few new habits. Eating with clear aligners will never require intricate meal planning or a rigid diet; nevertheless, be prepared to tweak your routine. Remember, even the smallest step in the direction of the smile you want can make your treatment go smoother and faster.

  1. No food and clear aligners in your mouth at the same time.

You must remove your trays before putting even the tiniest piece of food in your mouth. Breaking up food requires a lot of force that might simply deform your aligners. Imagine where your teeth will be moving if they are guided by cracked or crooked aligners.

  2. Serial snackers don’t wear clear aligners.

If there was one eating habit you could rethink while getting aligning your smile, it would be snacking. Every cookie, every apple or a chocolate bar get your aligners out of your mouth. That’s the time you could have spent working on your dream smile. Add brushing your teeth and a few quick bites can add up to a few hours without aligners doing their work.

  3. It’s not just about what you eat but also how long you eat it.

Since clear aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day to get your teeth moving, think about the precious minutes you spend chewing a banana or munching on peanuts. Is there a snack you could skip or add to your lunch instead? Don’t let time slip away as you get carried away enjoying your mid-afternoon donut with your aligners out.

  4. Ditch chewing gum.

You can’t have gum and wear clear aligners. The sticky texture and constant chewing undermine your treatment. Plus, you run the risk of getting gum stuck to your aligners and causing damage.

  1. Coffee and clear braces don’t go well together.

You can still start your day with a cup of joe but sipping coffee all day with your aligners in might leave ugly stains. Anything that can stain your teeth, stains your aligners. Try taking small sips rather than big gulps, savouring every drop and preventing your teeth from soaking in coffee for a long time. If you need a few extra pick-me-ups, remember to remove your aligners, and brush them and your teeth as soon as you chug down your next cup of coffee. Watch for the temperature of your coffee and avoid hot drinks in general as they might distort the shape of your aligners. As a result, they might slow down your treatment.

You will need to adjust your diet to support the work of the clear aligners and advance your treatment. Along with the above dos and don’ts, make sure you drink plenty of water to wash away bad bacteria and clean your aligners. Avoid sticky candies as well as spices that can stain your aligners.

Don’t forget to clean up the mess. Brush your teeth after every meal or snack. No exceptions and no excuses. Stock your office desk, glove compartment, purses, and backpacks with travel toothbrushes—not only will they serve as a daily reminder to keep your teeth and aligners clean, but also make sure no food gets trapped between your teeth.
